Sagittal split osteotomy – Do third molars increase the risk of complications?

This review investigating whether the presence of third molars during sagittal split osteotomy of the mandible increases the risk of complications included 15 studies. The findings suggests no statistically significant relationship between the presence of 3Ms and complications. However a majority of the studies were retrospective with 13 studies being considered to be at high risk of bias so the certainty of the evidence is considered to be very low.

Titanium or biodegradable osteosyntheses in orthognathic surgery?

This review assessing the efficacy and morbidity of biodegradable vs. titanium osteosyntheses in orthognathic surgery included 33 studies 11 of which were RCTs. The findings suggest that biodegradable osteosyntheses is a valid alternative to titanium osteosyntheses for orthognathic surgery, but the quality of evidence is low.

Orthognathic surgery: Are perioperative steroids beneficial?

Bariatric surgery and marked weight loss is likely to improve knee complaints but there is a need for high quality studies

This review of perioperative systemic corticosteroids on clinically important outcomes in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery identified 8 small RCTs. A reduction in facial oedema was seen in those receiving systemic corticosteroids. However the quality of the studies is limited and there is lack of evidence on other outcomes or adverse effects.

2 reviews and 2 RCTs were discussed in this review of the effect of antibiotics on postoperative infections in orthognathic surgery. There is a lack ofclarity on the preferred antibiotic and the optimal duration of administration.
