Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and bacterial load in endodontics

This review of the efficacy of adjunctive photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on reducing bacterial load in the primary endodontic treatment of teeth with chronic apical periodontitis included 8 studies. While the findings suggest a benefit from aPDT the limited number and quality of the availabel studies mean the findings should be interpreted cautiously.

Dentine hypersensitivity: Is low-level light therapy effective?

This review assessing the efficacy of low-level light therapy (LLLT) on dentine hypersensitivity included 35 studies 27 of which were RCTs. The findings showed an immediate, interim and persistant benifical effect compared to placebo. However the certainty of the evidence was only low to very low.

Topical hyaluronic acid for recurrent aphthous stomatitis

This review of the efficacy of topical hyaluronic acid (HA) for reducing the signs and symptoms of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) included 9 studies 8 of which were RCTs. The findings suggest that HA may be a potential treatment option for RAS but the evidence is of very low certainty.

Photodynamic therapy as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment

This review of the adjunctive effects of lasers or antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) to non-surgical periodontal treatment included 17 RCTs. The studies were small and hetrogeneous including just 701 patients in total and of low quality providing very limited evidence.

Dentine hypersensitivity: lasers v topical desensitising agents

This review comparing the effectiveness of lasers and topical desensitising agent treatments for dentine hypersensitivity included 13 studies. None of the studies was at low risk of bias so the evidence is of low-quality and insufficient to draw any conclusions on the superiority of lasers or conventional topical desensitising agents.

Diode laser for fibrous hyperplasia – faster but more swelling and longer healing

This small trial suggests that that while the diode laser treatment was marginally quicker than the traditional scalpel removal of fibrous hyperplasia, it required fewer analgesics and no sutures. However, there was more swelling, and wound healing was longer.
