This review of the prevalence of orofacial injuries in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) included 12 studies. Ten studies were included in a meta-analysis which estimates the assess the prevalence of orofacial injuries in patients with CP at 34% (95%CI; 18 – 25%).

Self-applied dentifrices for managing dentine hypersensitivity

This review and network meta-analyses of the effectiveness of self-applied dentifrices in the management of dentine hypersensitivity included 68 studies. Findings indicated that formulations including stannous, potassium +/- stannous, and arginine result in significant short ( 2-weeks) and long term inprovements. However the studies were hetrogeneous and only 4 were at low risk of bias.

Bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite to occlude dentinal tubules

In her first blog for the Dental Elf Rebecca Manson takes a look at an in-vitro review of bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite for the occlusion of dentinal tubules. The findings provide some evidence that that bioactive glass/hydroxyapatite are effective in occluding dentinal tubules in an in-vitro setting. Well conducted long term clinical trials are needed to assess effectiveness in a clinical setting.

This review of mouthwashes for the management of dentine hypersensitivity included 7 small studies all at high risk of bias. While minor benefits in patients’ subjective perception were seen the limited quality of the study means these findings should be interpreted with caution.

Dental bond strength improves with enamel etching

This review of 10 in-vitro studies suggests that bond strength is improved by the use of multi-mode adhesives with prior acid etching only for enamel. This improvement was not seen with mild universal adhesives in dentine.

Air polishing- glycine powder has less potential for harm suggests review

This review included 17 studies the majority (12) of which were in vitro; and all at risk of bias to greater or lesser extent. The results suggest that glycine powder air polishing had less potential for harm of oral hard and soft tissues than sodium bicarbonate powders.
