Back in February of this year we reported on the rests of a trial that compared he masticatory performance and ability of a simplified technique for complete denture fabrication with a conventional technique.(Dental Elf 25th Feb 2013). This paper presents the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) including patient satisfaction and denture quality.

42 patents who had been edentulous for at least a year were randomised to complete dentures fabricated according to a simplified ( S) or conventional method (C) .  OHRQoL was assessed using the Brazilian version of the OHIP-EDENT a specific 19-question instrument, denture quality was assessed using an 8- item instrument. Assessments were made at baseline, 3 and 6 months.

  • 39 patients were assessed at 3 and 6 months
  • Groups presented no difference for OHRQoL, denture quality and general satisfaction.
  • Differences regarding patient satisfaction with some aspects of the dentures were found after 3 months (S > C), but were insignificant at 6 months.

The authors concluded

the simplified method is able to produce dentures of a quality comparable to those produced by the conventional method, influencing OHRQoL and patient satisfaction similarly.
