A number of new critical summaries have been made available on the ADE-EBD website of the past few weeks.
The first is an appraisal of a 2010 review by Martínez-Maestre et al. that looked at the association between dental bone loss and systemic osteoporosis. The reviewer highlighted that this was a weak review of observational studies that does little to clarify the relationship between osteoporosis and periodontitis.
The second is another 2010 review by Finnema et al. This review looked at whether in-vitro characteristics of enamel bond strength testing provided data that reliably translated into clinical orthodontic practice? The review found variation in the testing parameters which meant that clinicians had to be cautions in the interpretation an use of laboratory data when making clinical decisions.
The third appraisal is of a 2011 review of short implants (< 10-mm) in partially edentulous patients by Tellerman et al. The review was considered to be good and found that the two years survival rate was similar to standard implants. Survival rates increased with longer designs and for those in the mandible.
